Chapter Sixteen

Sutton lingered just long enough the next morning to have a cup of coffee with Kate. She drove home slowly, enjoying the quiet streets and crepe myrtles in full bloom. After pulling into the driveway, she sat for a long minute, simply basking in the afterglow. She had plenty to think about and wonder about and worry about, but she could get to that later. Now, with the smell of Kate still clinging to her skin, she let every detail of the night play through her mind.

Kate’s playful laugh. The sound she made when Sutton slipped inside her. How slipping inside her felt like coming home. The way Kate came—passion and joy, unbridled and completely in the moment.

All the things Sutton had spent the better part of a decade telling herself she didn’t need and could live without. Things that would be a whole hell of a lot harder to live without after last night. She chuckled to herself. So much for not overthinking.

She found Dad in his easy chair, doing a crossword. He looked up and peered at her over the top of his reading glasses with a look that reminded her of the times he caught her breaking curfew.

“What?”

He cleared his throat and made a point of looking back at his puzzle. “I didn’t say anything.”

“You didn’t have to. You gave me the look.”

He gave her the look again. “What look?”

She pointed at him. “That one. It’s stern and a little judgmental.”

He shook his head and, again, looked down at his puzzle. “I have no idea what you’re talking about. You’re a grown woman and can come and go as you please. I’m not about to tell you what to do with your time. Or with whom.”

Ha. “There. Just by saying that, it’s clear you’re thinking the opposite.”

He set down his pencil and shoved his glasses to the top of his head. “I’m just saying you should be careful.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I have a pretty good idea of who you spent the night with. That’s what I mean.”

“Kate’s a grown woman. With a child. It’s not like we were up to anything nefarious.”

He sniffed, though she couldn’t tell if it was the content of her comeback or that she was talking back in the first place. “Kate’s built a good life for herself and Harper. And you have your own life to think about. Forgetting that is playing with fire.”

“Okay, Dad.”

He set the crossword aside and got to his feet. Even in the midst of this conversation, she couldn’t help but notice he seemed to have an easier time of it than before the first surgery. “I think some parts of the past are better left there.”

Sutton blew out a breath. He wasn’t wrong, at least when it came to some things. And he obviously had her best interests at heart. But in this case, regardless of what did or didn’t happen with Kate, she disagreed. She needed last night—more than she’d known and certainly more than she would ever disclose to her father.
